The Patriots got off to an interesting start to the 2007-08 NFL season to say the least. They blew out the New York Jets in week 1 by a score of 38-14, although the Pats are being accused of videotaping the Jets sidelines and stealing defensive signs-a crime that could land them without draft picks for next year if found guilty.
But let’s discuss what makes the Patriots a favorite to win the American Football Conference and Super Bowl. With the additions made to both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, the Pats have vastly improved in the areas.
By signing Adalius Thomas not only did they get the best free agent linebacker, but they also got a player who can do it all-he can play the pass, the run and rush the passer; he is the total package.
Thomas reminds Patriots Coach Bill Belichick of a player named Willie McGinest-a lock for the Hall of Fame and a player who helped Belichick win three super bowl rings.
Asante Samuel is finally back after he agreed to sign the one-year franchise tag. Samuel is one of the best shut down corners in the NFL. Once the Patriots get Rodney Harrison back from suspension for taking the banned substance HGH, look for him to team up with Samuel and make up one of the league’s best secondaries.
Moving to the other side of the ball, the Pats traded for a terrific talent at Randy Moss. Wide receiver Moss showed everyone Sunday why he is considered one of the best in the game, as he tore apart the Jets secondary for 183 yards on 9 receptions and a touchdown.
This is trouble considering he is playing with one of the league’s best quarterbacks in Tom Brady.
Brady already has three Super Bowl rings, and with this kind of firepower watch out for him to have an unbelievable year and add another ring.
Not bad for a sixth round draft choice.
After this weekend’s game against the Chargers, we’ll know more about the Pats as a team, but if they can get through week two without a loss or a major injury, watch for them to breeze through their schedule until they face Peyton Manning and the Colts. My prediction is that Brady and the rejuvenated Moss will hoist the Lombardi trophy together come January.
