Felipe Acosta saw a good season come to an end in the ITA Regional Quarter finals this past Saturday.
Acosta defeated University of Arkansas-Little Rock’s German Perez 6-0, 6-3 to advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals in the consolation bracket, but he dropped a 2-6, 0-6 match to Scott McCormick from Wichita State. The loss ended SLU’s fall season.
“Overall, this was a great week for us,” said SLU Director of Tennis Operations Jonathan Zych. “Many of the other coaches said that this is the best team at SLU in a long time, and I feel the same way. Our players have been coming together and improving and I am excited about the spring [season]. I just feel great about the whole experience.”
In addition to playing singles, Acosta also teamed with senior Paul Feder in doubles action at the ITA Regionals, but they fell to the ULAR duo of Carlos Nunez and German Perez by the score of 9-7.
“I’m encouraged by our doubles play this week. Acosta and Feder had the momentum early with a 3-0 lead, but the other team battled back for the win,” Zych said. “Our team seems to be peaking, so I’m excited about the spring season.”
Acosta, a business major concentrating in international business, was born in Bogota, Colombia.
In Colombia, he was ranked the No. 3 junior player in the country while winning three National Singles Championships. He also ranked in the top 10 of his class academically.
In his freshman season, Acosta suffered an injury in his first match of the spring season, causing him to miss action until the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships. He was able to come back, however, and garner three wins at No. 2 doubles with teammate Matt Gordon.
Acosta had a very successful sophomore campaign that saw a long string of success in doubles matches with partner P.J. Hendrie. The duo amassed a six-match winning streak in doubles play. Acosta accounted for 10 victories in doubles play throughout the year.
Acosta finished the year with a record of 6-15 in singles and 10-10 in doubles action. His efforts earned him a spot on the A-10 Second Team.
Acosta finished this year’s fall season with a singles record of 4-5, while teammates Sean McManus and Hendrie collected records of 6-3 and 5-4 respectively. Acosta also finished the season with a 3-5 doubles record.
