The Saint Louis University women’s basketball team will do its part this Sunday to participate for breast cancer awareness.
The Bills will play La Salle at 2 p.m. at the Baumann-Eberhardt Center that will be nationally televised on CSTV.
“We are excited about the opportunity to devote a day to raising visibility, money and breast cancer awareness,” head women’s coach Shimmy Gray-Miller said about the “Think Pink” initiative, which is sponsored by the Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Association.
“Think Pink” began in 2007 and more than 120 schools joined in the effort. This year, SLU joins more than 600 other schools that will participate, according to WBCA’s website.
“The WBCA is very excited to promote an initiative that touches all levels of our membership and unifies them for such a great cause,” WBCA CEO Beth Bass said.
Gray-Miller has pledged to donate $10 for each defensive rebound and $5 for each offensive rebound her team makes against La Salle. The donation will be divided between the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Kay Yow WBCA Cancer Fund.
Fans can participate in the event, too. The WBCA encourages fans to wear pink and donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The first 200 fans to enter the center will receive a pink ribbon or keychain to promote breast cancer awareness.
Gray-Miller and her staff, as well as game administrators, will wear pink for the game. The Billiken players will wear pink headbands and shoelaces, and media relations staff will print game statistics on pink paper, according to SLU’s athletic website.
Even officials will participate. The initiative encourages them to blow pink whistles in games and donate to the Kay Yow Cancer WBCA Cancer Fund.
The event takes place nationwide Feb. 8 to 17.
