Men’s basketball
The Saint Louis University men’s basketball team went nearly seven minutes without a basket as Dayton pulled away in the second half for a 63-36 victory.
The Billikens were looking for their second consecutive conference road win, but the Flyers sealed the win by sinking eight 3-pointers on the night.
Junior Tommie Liddell III led the Billikens in both scoring and rebounds with 10 points and four defensive rebounds on the night. Junior Kevin Lisch followed closely behind with 9 points.
The Billikens fell to 11-9, 2-4 in the A-10, while the Flyers end their three-game losing skid and improve to 3-3.
The Billikens return home to host Massachusetts on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Baseball
Saint Louis University Baseball Coach Darin Hendrickson announced on Jan. 11 that infielder Andrew Guerra will transfer to SLU after spending the previous two seasons at Rice University.
He enters the program as a sophomore and will begin his three years of eligibility immediately.
“We needed some help in the infield, and Andrew is going to fit in nicely for us,” Hendrickson said. “He is athletic, he runs well and has great range. He is probably best suited at second base, and we anticipate that he will earn a starting job as a redshirt freshman.”
Guerra was a first-team All-District selection in 2005 at Jesuit College Preparatory School in Dallas. He did not see any game action for Rice, though he did gain valuable experience during his redshirt season in 2006 and in a backup role in 2007.
Track and field
Saint Louis University journeys to Cedar Falls, Iowa, this weekend to partake in the UNI Invitational, hosted by the University of Northern Iowa.
The Billikens are coming off last week’s Gladstein Invite at Indiana University, where David Whelan, Austin Critchlow and Matt Alexander all set new school records on the men’s side. For the women, Sara Fraley lowered her season-best time in the 800 meters, and Molly Burke ran the team’s fastest time of the season in the 3,000.
Track and Field Coach Jon Bell is in his first season after coaching cross country in the fall.
Men’s swimming
For the fourth time this season, Saint Louis University swimmer Brad Byars has been chosen as the Atlantic 10 Conference Men’s Swimming Co-Performer of the Week for the period ending Jan. 27. He has earned more weekly honors than any other league swimmer this season.
Byars earned two individual wins at last weekend’s Lindenwood Quad, in addition to helping the 200 medley relay to a first-place finish.
In addition, he went on to post the Billikens’ top 100 fly performance (51.02) of the season.
Byars has been a member of four school record-setting relays throughout his career.
