Cross-country
Three women’s cross-country runners signed National Letters of Intent on Feb. 15 to run with the Saint Louis University team. High school seniors Maria Drzcymski from Fort Dodge, Iowa; Hilary Orf from Ballwin, Mo.; and Jenna Romano from Omaha, Neb., will begin their four years of eligibility starting with the 2008-09 academic year.
“This is without a doubt the best cross-country or track-and-field class ever signed at SLU,” said Jon Bell, men’s and women’s cross-country coach. “This group will help us take a huge step toward our goal of winning the Atlantic 10 Conference team title while also performing well at the NCAA Regionals.”
Women’s soccer
Four new players will be a part of the Saint Louis University women’s soccer huddle beginning in the 2008 fall season. Defenders Andrea Barklage and Sarah Reinking, and forward Jasmina Suljic all come from the St. Louis area, while forward Jessica Lopez will travel to SLU from Chandler, Ariz. Each player will have four years of intercollegiate eligibility at the university.
“We are pleased to welcome this group of players to Saint Louis University,” Women’s Soccer Coach Tim Champion said. “It is a small recruiting class in numbers, but each player brings considerable talent and potential to our program.”
Softball
For the first time since the 2005 season, the SLU softball team completed a game without a hit. In the first game of the double header against the University of Missouri, the game ended after five innings, when the Tigers reached 10 runs. The defeat brought an end to Rachel Heet’s eight-game hitting streak, and Nicki Jost’s seven-game streak. The SLU offense was more productive in the second game, but not enough to produce a win, as the Bills fell 6-0. They are now 3-6 overall.
The team heads to Cape Girardeau, Mo., this weekend where it will compete in the All-Missouri Cancer Tournament on March 1 and 2.
Men’s basketball
The Saint Louis University Men’s Basketball Team delivered a win against Saint Joseph’s in front of a national television audience on ESPN2 on Thursday, Feb. 28. Junior guard Tommie Liddell III led the Billikens with 21 points, while junior guard Kevin Lisch added 17. Senior guard Danny Brown chipped in 11 points, and senior forward Luke Meyer hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Billikens improve to 16-12 overall and 7-7 in the Atlantic 10. Their next match-up is St. Bonaventure on March 1.
Track and field
The SLU track and field team’s season came to a close Feb. 16, with the Atlantic 10 Championship at Mackal Field House on the University of Rhode Island campus. The Billikens had a number of men and women break school records at the event.
“I am very excited with the meet,” said Jon Bell, men’s and women’s track and field coach. “We ran a lot faster today than we did last season at the conference meet, so that is an indication that we are heading in the right direction. However, we also know we need to continue to work to get better.”
The team’s outdoor campaign will begin March 28 in a meet at Wash. U.
Equestrian team
The Saint Louis University Equestrian Team, a club sport, competed in the Zone 9, Region 2 Midwest Circuit on Feb. 16 and 17. The competition was part of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association and allowed university students to compete English and Western regardless of their financial status or riding level.
The competition took place at Baskin Farms near Wentzville, Mo. The SLU team competed against state schools such as Kansas State, the University of Kansas, Northern Illinois, Missouri State and Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Seven riders were recognized for their accomplishments.
