In a situation similar to last year, the women’s basketball team finds itself as the No. 11 seed and in need of a first-round upset at the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
The Billikens will face No. 6 seed Saint Joseph’s tonight in Philadelphia-a team that they lost to earlier this season. Head Coach Shimmy Gray-Miller said she is confident there will be a different outcome this time around.
“I anticipate that [St. Joseph’s] will do the same thing they did against us the first time we played, because they were so successful against us,” Gray-Miller said. “They forced us to take a lot of outside shots, which isn’t our game, so we have made adjustments to that.”
Part of Saint Louis University’s game plan is to contain freshman Sarah Acker, a Saint Joseph’s center who averages more than 12 points per game.
“Saint Joseph’s has a post player who’s pretty strong and finishes well,” senior guard Hayley Leake said. “There’s not necessarily one or two superstars on their team; they just play well together. The key is knowing the strengths and weaknesses of those players.”
