Basketball signs two more recruits
Head Men’s Baseketball Coach Rick Majerus announced April 16 that 6-foot, 4-inch tall guard Kyle Cassity and 6-foot guard Ruben Cotto have signed national letters of intent to attend Saint Louis University and play basketball for the Billikens. Both players will have four years of eligibility beginning with the 2008-09 academic year.
Cassity was a Class 2A first-team All-State selection by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association after averaging 20 points per game. He scored 1,319 points in his high school career. Cotto was a first-team All-Metro selection by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He averaged 22.3 ppg along with 5.0 rebounds per game at Alton High School.
McNabb, Smith sign with soccer
On April 24, Head Men’s Soccer Coach Dan Donigan announced that Keegan Smith has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University and play soccer. Then on Wednesday, April 30, Tyler McNabb joined Smith by signing to play for SLU. Both players will have four years of eligibility starting next fall.
Byars awarded NCAA Scholarship
After being named Student-Athlete of the Year on March 5, senior Brad Byars added yet another honor to his list with the NCAA postgraduate scholarship award. As one of 58 NCAA winter-sport student-athletes to earn an educational grant for the upcoming academic year, the senior will receive a one-time, non-renewable grant of $7,500. Byars, who will attend SLU’s School of Law to pursue a career in health-care law, was the only Atlantic 10 Conference winter-sport participant to receive the award.
Softball on four-game winning streak
After dropping six of seven games from April 16 through Saturday, April 26, the SLU softball team has responded with a four-game winning streak. The Bills defeated Rhode Island twice on Sunday, April 27, and Western Illinois twice on Tuesday, April 29. Sophomore catcher and outfielder Nicki Jost and sophomore infielder Brittney Schmidt each had two hits against Rhode Island to lead the SLU offense, while senior pitcher Lorena Floccari struck out five against Western Illinois.
In its last regular-season game, the team travels to Ohio to face off against Dayton on Saturday, May 3.
Track and field to conclude season
The track and field season will come to an end Sunday, May 5, with the conclusion of the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships. Junior Matt Alexander will lead the team on the men’s side, while senior Laura Coyer will lead the women.
FSN showed episode on baseball team
FSN Midwest debuted “Under the Lights: SLU Baseball” Wednesday, April 30, at 6:30 p.m. The 30-minute episode documented the SLU baseball squad as it traveled to Jupiter, Fla., on Feb. 27 to play the St. Louis Cardinals in an exhibition game.
FSN’s cameras followed the Bills from St. Louis, on the team bus, in the dugout and on the field to capture the experience. SLU played the Cardinals for the first time in its history despite having home diamonds separated by just two miles.
