With a 2-0 loss against Charlotte in the semifinals, the women’s soccer team ended its run in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament.
The team played Charlotte in the regular season and lost 3-0.
“We gave them a good game,” sophomore back Christine Steinmetz said. “We stayed up with them.”
Head coach Tim Champion attributed the loss to the difficulty of playing two days in a row. In the Charlotte game, the team played without junior midfielder Susan Frederickson, senior midfielder Molly Hartmann and junior forward Julia Bradenberg.
“We played based on what we had,” Champion said.
The Billikens made it to the semifinals after they defeated St. Bonaventure, 2-1, in the first round of the tournament.
“We were excited that we got past St. Bonaventure,” senior midfielder Allison Sole said. “It was fun to play a team that we haven’t faced before. I think we played great.”
Steinmetz scored her first career goal in the game against St. Bonaventure.
“We had a lot of shots and put goals away,” she said. “We out played them.”
Sole, who has played her last season with the team, said, “No matter what the outcome of it was, we had a great season.”
Champion said the team was strong defensively, but it was unable to execute offensively by scoring goals. He attributed much of its struggles in the tournament to youth and inexperience.
Ultimately, the head coach was pleased that many of the young players gained experience through playing time.
“We still managed to win 11 games,” Champion said. “We had a difficult schedule and only one loss in the non-conference schedule.”
The team finished its season with an 11-6-4 overall record and 6-4-1 in A-10.
