The Saint Louis University women’s basketball team split its two games this past week, earning an overtime victory against La Salle last Saturday and losing to Charlotte this past Tuesday.
The Billikens entered the Charlotte game hoping to extend their two-game road win streak, their first such streak since the final road game of the 2001-2002 and the first road game of the 2002-2003 season.
Charlotte came out quick, built a solid lead and had the Billikens playing catch-up throughout the entire game.
The Billikens slowly chipped away at Charlotte’s lead and came within one point twice in the second half; however, each time the Billikens cut Charlotte’s lead, they were unable to surmount the deficit and fell further behind. An 11-2 Charlotte run late in the game sealed the game, which Charlotte eventually won 66-56.
Junior Theresa Lisch scored a game-high 21 points and Junior Amanda Kemezys added 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
In the game against La Salle, the Billikens were the team that held the lead throughout much of the game. The Billikens started the game strong and led by 13 points at the half and by 16 points with less than ten minutes left in the second half.
La Salle went on a 13-0 run to cut the lead to three, but the Billikens withstood the rally to go back up by nine with less than five minutes left.
However, La Salle went on another rally, this time taking a two point lead before the Billikens scored again. The Billikens again took the lead, only to see La Salle tie the game on a 3-pointer with one second left to send the game to overtime.
La Salle began the extra period strong, but the Billikens retook the lead for good, winning 77-73. The Billikens could not have won the game without Lisch, who scored a team-record 37 points.
As a result of her impressive games, Lisch was named Atlantic-10 player of the week for the second consecutive week and the third time this season.
The Billikens face St. Joseph’s this Saturday, then rest a week before they take on Massachusetts Jan. 31.
