ESPN The Magazine has selected junior guard Theresa Lisch to its first-team Academic All-American team.
“I believe that it’s the most prestigious award you can get as a Division I basketball player because it takes a high level of commitment on and off the court,” Head Coach Shimmy Gray-Miller said.
No women’s basketball player at Saint Louis University has ever been named to the first team before.
“It was not a personal goal or something I’ve been striving to attain. I’ve always wanted to work my hardest in every aspect of my life–including basketball and school–and I see honors such as this one a natural outcome of my work coupled with the hard work of those who support me and promote my growth,” Lisch said.
Lisch is a major in communication sciences and disorders. In order to be considered for the Academic All-American team, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum 3.30 grade point average as well as a significant role on the team.
Being named first-team All-Academic places Lisch in the same category as Connecticut’s Maya Moore, a strong candidate for women’s Naismith College Player of the year Award.
“For Theresa to be named in the same breath as Maya Moore is pretty special,” Gray-Miller said.
Lisch agreed with her coach.
“I’m honored to be included the group of women who have received this award not only this year, but also in years past,” Lisch said.
Lisch is currently No. 16 on the national scoring charts at 19.9 points per game and No. 11 in free throw percentage at 88 percent.
“The thing about her, as smart as she is, she’s just humble . She’d much rather win ball games,” Gray-Miller said.
