On Feb. 16, science educator, television star and American comedian Bill Nye will be speaking at 7 p.m. in the Busch Student Center Ballrooms. Doors to the Ballrooms by ABP will open at 6:15 p.m. exclusively to SLU students. Nye will be speaking on how SLU students are going to change the world.
“Trying to be more efficient is a very hot topic, it isn’t going away and he is someone we knew as children so he is ideal to speak on these issues,” Great Issues Committee Chair Steve Della Camera said.
Presented by Great Issues Committee, SLU Environmental Task Force, Just Earth! and the Student Government Association, Nye’s speech will deal primarily with global warming, global sustainability and how students can promote a healthy longevity for the earth.
“I am really excited he is coming, it is making my mom, who is a science teacher, very jealous,” sophomore Amy Skupien said.
Nye is known from the Public Broadcast System’s “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” an educational television program he hosted from 1993-1997 that won 28 Emmy Awards. Nye additionally won seven national Emmy Awards for writing, producing and performing.
Currently Nye is the host of two television programs called “The 100 Greatest Discoveries” airing on the Science Channel and “The Eyes of Nye” airing on PBS. He also appears on “The Climate Code” airing on The Weather Channel where he discusses ways to save energy.
“He is a very well known figure for our generation and very versed in sustainability issues,” Camera said.
Nye holds two Honorary Doctorate degrees from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Goucher College. A dedicated advocate for global sustainability, Nye rides his bike to work everyday and lives in a home with ecologically friendly modifications.
