After a record-breaking performance on Tuesday, the Saint Louis University softball team followed up their two victories with two tough home losses yesterday.
The softball team played a doubleheader Tuesday against Eastern Illinois, winning the first game 11-10 in extra innings.
In the second game, the Billikens hit a school-record 17 hits in a 19-2, five-inning victory. The game was over in five innings because of the initiation of the mercy rule.
However, unlike their previous games, the Billikens’ bats went cold in yesterday’s doubleheader against Southeast Missouri State. The Billikens fell behind 1-0 in the fourth inning and 2-0 in the fifth.
The Billikens finally came alive in the sixth inning, when the Billikens scored four runs.
But the Billikens were unable to hold their lead, giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Billikens made it exciting, managing to put the potential winning run on third base in the eighth; however, they were unable to capitalize from the opportunity.
In the bottom of the inning, SEMO also put a runner on third, but unlike the Billikens, SEMO took advantage of the situation, driving home the run and winning 5-4.
In the second game, SLU took the early lead when senior Rachel Heet hit a solo home run in the first inning.
SEMO tied the game in the second inning, but the Billikens regained the lead in the third after three singles drove in sophomore Kristin Nicoletti.
In the bottom of the third, however, SEMO scored five runs to take a 6-2 lead. SLU got one run back in the fourth inning, but SEMO again responded with two runs in the fifth.
The Billikens tried to mount a comeback in the sixth inning, but were only able to score two runs. SEMO scored a final run in the seventh, but the Billikens did not mount another comeback effort, finally losing 9-5.
The Billikens will begin their second homestand of the season Friday when they play conference foe St. Joseph’s.
The Billikens will play eight conference games during the homestand, which will be crucial games for the Billikens as they are currently third in the Atlantic-10 conference standings.
