The Saint Louis University softball team is nearing the end of its regular season, as the Billikens have only two more games left to play.
This season has been a successful one for the Billikens, who have won at least 20 games for the third year in a row.
Despite the fact that the Billikens’ current record is 21-29, the team has played well throughout the season and has faced tough competition, including four teams ranked in the top 25.
The stout competition helped the Billikens as they hold a 12-4 record in Atlantic-10 conference play and are currently tied for second in the conference rankings.
Depending on the result of the final games, the Billikens can finish second or third but can do no worse. Even if the Billikens fall to third place, they still improved on last season’s fourth place finish and surpassed their projected finish for this season.
“I think it’s awesome. Seeing the ability on our team and seeing how far we can go is exciting,” sophomore Caitlin Trevillyan said.
The Billikens have also enjoyed individuall successes.
Senior Rachel Heet and junior Nicki Jost are in the top 10 in almost every career statistical category at SLU, and both have held the career record for RBIs this season. In addition, sophomore Kristin Nicoletti leads the A-10 with 31 steals and is ranked No. 14 in the nation with 0.65 steals per game.
“Everyone plays a certain role and people have stepped up when they need to. Everyone brings something to the table,” Trevillyan said.
All these individual performances have helped the team to one of its best seasons in recent history and led to their high conference ranking.
Whether the Billikens place second or third in the A-10, they have put themselves in a good position for the A-10 tournament, which takes place next week.
“We’re planning on playing to our potential and getting to the championship game,” Trevillyan said. “Making the championship game is definitely our goal.”
