“Never judge a book by its cover.” Though cliché, that phrase is often true, and it applies to the new Motion City Soundtrack album, “My Dinosaur Life.”
Although the album’s cover is trite in its design (a disgruntled dinosaur sits underneath the band’s signature label), the music inside is quite the opposite.
In “My Dinosaur Life,” Motion City Soundtrack gives listeners a taste of their diverse talents and displays an affinity for “punk pop.” Although the band’s past three albums were quite repetitive in the type of music they produced, this one is different.
The sound of Motion City Soundtrack has become more mature, and each song on the album is different from the next. Songs range from the melodious punk pop (“Stand Too Close”) to the typical punk pop (“Disappear”), with provocative drums and guitars. Each song is upbeat and energetic, and never loses its underlying sense of melody.
Lyrically, “My Dinosaur Life” contains many stories and emotional catharses. Its only slight flaw is that a few songs seem lyrically repetitive. However, this does enhance the catchiness.
Recommended tracks include “Skin and Bones,” “The Weakends,” “Her Words Destroyed My Planet,” “Stand Too Close” and “Delirium.”
This is the first album that the band has made with Columbia Records, and it is produced by Mark Hoppus from Blink 182. “My Dinosaur Life” is in stores now.
As the lyrics of the album’s first song, “Worker Bee,” put it: “It has been a good year, a good new beginning,” and this is a great new beginning for Motion City Soundtrack.
Be sure to check this album out. You won’t regret it.
