St. Bonaventure stole victory from the jaws of defeat on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at the Billiken’s expense.
SLU was close to pulling a major Atlantic 10 upset during the seniors’ last home game in knocking off the 17-10 Bonnies, and for about 32 minutes, it looked like it could happen.
The Billikens led by nine at the half and by as much as seven with eight minutes to go in the contest.
But then, things started spiraling out of control.
Before you could blink, the lead was down to four after a 13-1 St. Bonaventure run.
With 4:30 left, the Billikens were scrambling to climb back in the game and wondering how their lead evaporated so quickly.
Just as it seemed all hope was lost, Ashley Hanlen spotted up and hit a huge three-pointer to give the Billikens a 51-50 lead with a little over two minutes to go.
The final few minutes were an emotional seesaw battle. SLU quickly relinquished their lead, but then stole it right back on an Ayriell Robinson layup.
The Bonnies hit a couple of free throws to increase their lead to three, but another quick layup, this time by Janisha Gearlds, pulled the Billikens within one.
With 16 seconds to go, SLU fouled and hoped for the best, but the Bonnies made both their free throws. Needing a three to tie, the attempt rimmed out, sealing the fate of the Billikens.
When all was said and done, SLU fell to the Bonnies by a score of 60-55.
Robinson led the Billikens in scoring, chipping in 18, and Lorreal Jones tallied a double-double, pulling down 10 boards and scoring 10 points.
SLU wraps up its season on Saturday, Feb. 26 at Richmond.
