Punksatawney Phil might have promised six more weeks of winter, but that will not stop SLU’s Fine and Performing Arts department from kicking off its Spring Semester lineup.

First up, FPA will co-sponsor “Anatomy Is Destiny” with the World Chess Hall of Fame. You read that correctly. Thirty-two dancers will interpret an imaginary chess match between Marcel Duchamp and Rose Selavy. “Anatomy Is Destiny” will be performed on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Contemporary Art Museum. A reception will precede the event at 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, SLU Theatre is deep into production of its new musical “Bat Boy: The Musical.” Based on an infamous tabloid story, the musical focuses on a half-boy, half-bat found living in a cave. Robbie Distasio, Kristin McGuire, Natalie Sannes and Gregory Cuellar headline the cast, with Jason Cannon and Charlie Mueller as guest directors. “Bat Boy: The Musical” opens in Xavier Theatre on Friday, Feb. 24 and runs through the following weekend.

Next, the art history division of FPA is sponsoring a lecture by a visiting art historian from Duke University. The lecture, entitled “What does technology have to do with the humanities?” takes place on March 21 at 4 p.m. in Boileau Hall. Refreshments will be served.

Students of 200-level studio art will have the opportunity to showcase their work in Boileau Hall on Friday, April 27. From 4:30 to 7 p.m., a reception will take place to mark the opening of the exhibit, which will run on weekends after. The show provides an opportunity for students in studio art classes to present their work to the university community.

Also in April, the Theatre department will perform the closing show of the semester, which will be “Vinegar Tom,” by contemporary British playwright Caryl Churchill. The play, which examines 17th century witchcraft trials in England through a feminist perspective, opens on Friday, April 27 and runs through the following weekend. SLU’s own Tom Martin will direct this production.

Once spring has sprung, strings will be strung. With smaller performances scattered throughout the semester, the music division of FPA will take the Spring Semester out with a bang— albeit a harmonious one. Performances by the jazz ensemble, wind ensemble, guitar ensemble, choral performers and string quartet will take place during the last week of the semester in Il Monastero Sanctuary, Boileau Hall and Saint Francis Xavier College Church, respectively.

FPA’s spring calendar is packed with a variety of performances. There will be no shortage of chances to take in a little culture at SLU, and to admire the talents, efforts and accomplishments of fellow students.

We may have six more weeks of winter, but we have 12 more weeks of art.
