The Billikens get back on track with an impressive 4-1 victory over the undefeated University of Evansville Purple Aces.
After a heartbreaking loss in overtime to the University of Denver Pioneers, the Bills responded with a vengeance on Saturday night against the Purple Aces.
“It was a great response after the loss against Denver last week,” Bills Head Coach Mike McGinty said.
The Billikens hardly gave the Purple Aces any room to breathe as their squad applied immediate offensive pressure. It was only a matter of six minutes before the Bills added the game’s first goal. Jon Roeckle sent a pass to Robbie Kristo at the top of the 18-yard box who left it for Alex Sweetin to drill off the keeper’s glove and into the goal.
In the 35th minute the Purple Aces answered with an equalizer from a well-placed header by Brandon Causey.
“The goal should have never happened. Coach told us exactly what they were going to do, yet we still let them score,” Sweetin said.
Causey’s goal was the lone bright spot for the Purple Aces on Saturday night as the Bills proceeded to take over the game in the second half.
The Bills notched goal 2 of the night through a well-struck penalty kick by Alex Sweetin in the 51st minute. Officials rewarded Kingsley Bryce the penalty after Purple Aces goalkeeper, Eric Teppen, tripped him inside of the 18-yard box.
In the 64th minute, the Bills’ strong offensive attack struck again. Substitute Nick Maglasang gave a great feed to Adnan Gabejlic who scored his 3rd team-leading goal of the 2012 season.
Finally, in the 72nd minute the Bills capped off a thrilling offensive performance with another well-taken penalty kick by defender Jon Roeckle, giving the Bills a decisive 4-1 victory.
“It was a great bounce back win for us. We came out quick and scored early, which was what we needed,” Sweetin said.
The Billikens will be seeking their 5th win this season as they travel to Omaha to take on the nationally ranked University of Creighton Blue Jays on Sep. 22 at 7p.m.
