After two straight losses, the women’s soccer team was looking for a victory.
In dramatic fashion, the Billikens fashion travelled across the Mississippi River to defeat Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, 1-0, with a late goal in minute 89.
The Bills collected their second victory of the season (2-4-2) when Alli Reimer scored her first goal of the season. The Bills have one more non-conference game before they begin Atlantic 10 conference play.
In the game, the action did not pick up until the second half. The Bills got their best chance at the end of regulation time on a corner kick. The SIUE keeper denied the Bills their first attempt on goal, but Reimer collected the rebound to bury the shot in the back of the net with 1:01 left in regulation time.
However, the Bills could not celebrate quite yet. After the late Bills goal, SIUE made a shot on goal with 11 seconds left in the game. However, Bills goalkeeper Katie Walsh made the essential save, making a total of 9 saves during the game.
SIUE had 17 shots compared to the 6 shots by the Bills. The Bills held an advantage when it came to corner kicks, with 4 compared to SIUE’s 2.
The Bills last non-conference match is against DePaul University in Chicago on Thursday, Sept. 20. After that, the Bills begin their A-10 conference season against the two newest schools in the conference, Butler and Virginia Commonwealth University.
The Bills will play Butler in Indianapolis on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. and then return home to face VCU on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. The VCU game will be played at Hermann Stadium.
