Earlier this season, senior right-handed pitcher Alex Alemann became the Saint Louis University Billikens’ all-time wins leader with 27 wins.
Alemann hails from Weston, Fla. He has been the ace of the baseball team for the past two seasons posting 13 wins over the last two years with a ERA under 2.9.
“It is an honor,” Alemann said of becoming SLU’s all-time wins leader. “I couldn’t have done it without my teammates, coaches and support system.”
During his four years at SLU, Alemann has improved. In his freshman season, he was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and Atlantic-10 Conference Rookie of the Year for his 9-6 record with 72 strikeouts and a 4.71 ERA. In his sophomore campaign he posted a 5-6 record with a 3.05 ERA, the eighth lowest in the A-10. During his sophomore season, Alemann started to emerge as the ace of the team, throwing the season’s only complete game.
Alemann stood out during last season, his junior season. He posted a 7-2 record with a 2.84 ERA. He struck out 78 batters on the season, which was good for 8th all-time in Billiken history. He was also named second team All-Conference. This season Alemann is currently 6-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 68.1 innings pitched. He also has 54 strikeouts through his first 10 starts this season.
“It has been a great experience,” Alemann said of his four years with the SLU Baseball team. “There have been ups and downs but a lot more ups. I have a great team who really has made the experience fun.”
Just as he has grown as player over the four years on the team, he has seen the Billiken baseball program grow with him during his time at SLU.
“The program has definitely grown,” he said. “We have a winning culture that has grown. My freshman year we won the A-10 championship. My sophomore year we had an off year where we fell short of our goals. Last year we set a lot of school records and won the regular season A-10 championship. This year we are on pace for some great accomplishments.
Although the time commitment during baseball season is immense, Alemann has found time to devote to other causes outside of baseball both during the offseason and in season. These include volunteering with the Special Olympics of Missouri and working for Delaware North Companies Sportservice during Rams games.
“I have gotten accustomed to being busy all the time. There is no magic trick, it’s just having the awareness of what needs to be done,” he said
After graduation, Alemann said he hopes to continue playing baseball professionally, but if that doesn’t work out, the business school student has an offer to work for the Federal Reserve.
