The Saint Louis University field hockey team faced University of Massachusetts (UMass) at Soccer Park on Oct. 3.
The Minutewoman gained a commanding 3-0 lead over the Billikens that lasted until the 62nd minute, when sophomore back Carli Wolfe sent the ball into play with an entry pass to freshman midfielder Molly Feid, who was able to beat the keeper near the left post, cutting SLU’s deficit to two. The offense took advantage of this momentum, as sophomore forward Kristin Collins fired at the goal less than a minute later, but the shot was deflected by the keeper. This was not the end of the play, though, as freshman forward Erica Bondoc capitalized on the rebound and finished the play with a goal at the 62nd minute mark.
SLU earned a penalty corner as the game clock was winding down, but the Billikens could not beat the keeper and ultimately fell to UMass 3-2. Senior goalie Tori Westhead made eight saves on the day. Westhead commented on the performance stating “We really performed well against UMass, who is typically a strong conference opponent.”
The Billikens traveled to Springfield, Missouri, to play Missouri State on Oct. 4. The Billiken offense could not find the back of the net and ultimately lost by a score of 2-0.
Westhead made eight saves during the matchup. This performance gives her 123 saves for the season, tying the 12th best single save season total at Saint Louis University. Westhead has recorded 353 saves in her career, which is the fifth highest in Billiken program history.
Kissinger led the offense with three shots, one of which was on goal. She has taken 29 percent of SLU’s shots this season (26 of 89). Wolfe contributed two shots during the game.
The Billikens will travel to North Carolina to play Davidson on Oct. 9 and Appalachian State on Oct. 10.
