Meticulous work irrelevant once tourney begins

Joe George March 18, 2009
The palpable energy that surrounds the NCAA men's basketball tournament cannot be found in any other sporting event. 65 teams come together from all across the country with one goal in mind: cutting down the nets. It's true, for some that goal may seem a bit loftier than others.

This system does not need fixing

Andrew Bush March 18, 2009
Unfortunately, the last day of spring break and Selection Sunday coincided this year. This meant that during my four-hour drive back to St. Louis, I was forced to listen to scathing radio commentary about the conspiracies and flaws littering this year's scandalous NCAA tournament bracket.

Tennis gets some help from abroad

Bobby Schindler February 26, 2009
With the help of tennis, four international students are finding a new home in St. Louis. Both the men's and women's tennis teams at Saint Louis University have been bolstered by help from abroad this season. All four international student-athletes may have traveled different paths to arrive at SLU, but all of them have decided that being a Billiken can help them grow, both on and off the court.

Heet, Johns lone sources of experience

Micah Miller February 26, 2009
The Saint Louis University softball team includes seven freshmen and six sophomores on a roster of 20 players. Among the seven upperclassmen, only two, Rachel Heet and Katie Johns, are seniors. As the only seniors, Heet and Johns are very important to the team, both for their leadership roles and their on-field performances.

Bonnies take down Billikens; two games remain until A-10 tourney

Derrick Neuner February 26, 2009
The last week has been "hit and miss" for Saint Louis University men's basketball. Last Saturday, SLU stunned No. 25 Dayton in front of a sell-out crowd at Chaifetz Arena. However, the train came to a screeching halt last night against St. Bonaventure as the Bills (17-11, 8-6) fell 72-55 in New York.

Junior guard named an Academic All-American

Andrew Bush February 26, 2009
ESPN The Magazine has selected junior guard Theresa Lisch to its first-team Academic All-American team. "I believe that it's the most prestigious award you can get as a Division I basketball player because it takes a high level of commitment on and off the court," Head Coach Shimmy Gray-Miller said.

Bills can’t quite come back

Andrew Bush February 26, 2009
Once again, the Saint Lous University baseball team played entertaining, scrappy and competitive baseball for nine innings yesterday against Indiana State University. It just wasn't quite enough to steal a victory, as they fell 7-5 to the Sycamores to drop their record to 2-3 so far.

Bills pass first test in crucial two-game home stretch

Derrick Neuner February 19, 2009
A blizzard might have blown through Chaifetz Arena last night, but the Saint Joseph Hawks had a difficult task in front of them-cool down the red hot Saint Louis Billikens. SLU got off to a chilly start but warmed up nicely to send the 7,000 SLU fans in attendance home with a 73-70 win.

Upcoming rematch against Dayton promises to thrill

Joe George February 19, 2009
In case your heart hasn't already exploded from exciting games this season, the Atlantic 10-leading Dayton Flyers (23-3, 9-2 A 10) make their way to Chaifetz Arena Saturday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. For those of you who haven't followed Billiken basketball this season, the Bills suffered a 47-46 loss at Dayton Arena a few weeks ago after a Kwamain Mitchell layup came tantalizingly close to giving SLU a win at the buzzer.

Transfer finds a home at SLU

Kat Patke February 19, 2009
When a Division I college athlete transfers schools, it could be for any number of reasons. It could be because of a lack of playing time. Another common occurrence that prompts athletes to transfer is the firing of a head coach. This was not the case for senior shortstop Ryan Bennett.

Road tests prove to be invaluable

Micah Miller February 19, 2009
The Saint Louis University softball team traveled to Las Vegas last Friday to compete in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, a five game, three day tournament. The Billikens managed only one win during the tournament and suffered some tough losses. The team took small consolation in the fact that most of the losses came against highly-ranked teams.

Consistent starting five developing

Joe George February 12, 2009
For the casual Billiken basketball fan, it might appear as though a bunch of freshmen run on and off the court every game with no apparent plan in mind. Rest assured, however, a method to the madness has developed over the course of the season. Although Head Coach Rick Majerus has frequently stated, "starting is for high school," several players have proven their value as starters on this team.
