Season outcome tough to predict

Dan Hunninghake November 13, 2008
In a meeting during preseason training, the women's basketball players came up with a simple montra for this year: "heart, discipline, success and passion." It may just be four words to an average person, but to this year's team, these words are what define Billiken basketball.

From the ’20-20 club’ to starting position

Andrew Bush November 13, 2008
Shimmy Gray-Miller has been pushing her women's basketball team harder than ever this season. That's their reward for improvement-they get the pleasure of handling harder practices. During preseason workouts, six straight days of intense practice had most of her players worn out and looking forward to a well-earned day of rest.

Gearing up for season finale

Derrick Neuner November 13, 2008
The volleyball team is riding high this year-it defeated No. 3 Stanford, is currently No. 1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and, for the first time in program-history, is nationally ranked. But none of that matters. There's a storm on a way. The No. 20 Billikens go to Ohio to face conference rivals Xavier and Dayton this weekend in an end-of-the-season showdown.

Dahle hones long distance skills

Andrew Bush November 13, 2008
Sophomore Michael Dahle is not a pressure swimmer. As a specialist in the long distance events, he can't be. Otherwise, the daunting task that awaits him almost every meet-the grueling 1000-, 500-, and 200-meter races-would be too much too handle, even for someone enrolled in the notorious physical therapy program.

Team overpowered by Charlotte in A-10 semifinals

Ashley Jones November 13, 2008
With a 2-0 loss against Charlotte in the semifinals, the women's soccer team ended its run in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament. The team played Charlotte in the regular season and lost 3-0. "We gave them a good game," sophomore back Christine Steinmetz said.

Lisch appears OK after tailbone injury in exhibition game

Senior guard Kevin Lisch appears to be OK after leaving the game last Wednesday against Harris Stowe. Lisch was fouled after trying to save the ball from going out and landed on his back approximately two minutes into the game. He hit the ground hard, was helped off the court by Saint Louis University trainers and left the game for X-rays.

Building success from scratch

Chaifetz Arena is not the only new and exciting addition to Billiken Athletics this year. After finishing with a record of 16-15 last season, the men's basketball team looks to emerge from their youthful inexperience. They will do so under the tutelage of renowned head coach Rick Majerus, now in his second year with the team.

Lisch hurt, status unknown

Derrick Neuner November 6, 2008
The men's basketball game last night was bittersweet. Yes, it was the first game of Chaifetz Arena's inaugural season. And yes, the Billikens trumped cross-Compton rival Harris-Stowe State by 46 points, but the bitter part comes with Kevin Lisch's injury within the first two minutes.

SLU finally enjoys home court advantage over other teams

Dan Hunninghake November 6, 2008
The road to Chaifetz Arena was a long one coming, yet University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J., insisted for a good atmosphere for athletics on campus. The game against Harris-Stowe State University last night was the culmination of not only Biond's vision for the arena, but also the effort of many people to make that vision come to fruition.

A-10 Tourneyinvades campus

Ashley Jones November 6, 2008
Tim Champion is thrilled that his women's soccer team starts the Atlantic 10 tournament against St. Bonaventure. And, even more so than that, Saint Louis University will be hosting the tournament on campus this year. It's not that the Bonnies are a pushover, since they have the same record as the Billikens in A-10 play at 6-4-1.

Creating success from dedication to work

Andrew Bush November 6, 2008
How many college students have a commitment at 4:50 a.m. every day? In all likelihood, the number is small. The prospect of class at 8 a.m. might even be too daunting for many students to undertake. For the swimming and diving team at Saint Louis University, however, this is the sort of massive effort that will be expected throughout the course of the season until February.

Improving with ‘four and ones’

Dan Hunninghake October 29, 2008
Preparations for the spring baseball season are already underway. And winter may be on St. Louis' doorstep, but don't think the cold weather will keep the players from getting to the diamond for practices. The team is looking to build on its 24-win season last spring, which was eight more wins than the 2007 season.
