Elite athletes heeding elite diets

Kejan Haynes October 29, 2008
For the average college student, pizza, macaroni and cheese and instant anything is part of the staple diet. But for some, watching what they eat is part of college life-the freshman 15 isn't an option. These aren't just your regular college students, though, they are student athletes, and they usually have to think twice before going for a cheeseburger.

Derrick Neuner October 29, 2008
It was as easy as 1-2-3. Three teams walked into Chaifetz Arena undefeated last weekend, yet the women's volleyball team was the only one to walk out without a loss. Saint Louis University beat both Dayton and Xavier, 3-0. The Bills have won 11 straight matches and are still undefeated in Atlantic 10 play.

Derrick Neuner October 29, 2008
The volleyball team picked up its 12th straight victory and its fifth consecutive shutout yesterday evening against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, which head coach Anne Kordes described as "a shaky performance" by the Bills. The team improves to 20-4 on the season; SIUE, though not part of the Atlantic 10 conference, has long been seen as a local rival to SLU.

Heading into the last two games of its regular-season schedule, the women's soccer team is in a fifth-place tie with St. Bonaventure. Before the A-10 Tournament, which will be held at Robert R. Hermann Stadium this year, the team will finish up its A-10 schedule with two road games against Massachusetts Oct.

Ashley Jones October 22, 2008
It all started in kindergarten on a co-ed soccer team. Little did Lauren Olson know, her interest in the sport would lead her to Saint Louis University for four years of collegiate soccer with the Billikens. "It is a great experience, traveling and representing your school and the game you love," Olson said "Soccer was what I wanted to continue.

After nine-game unbeaten streak, Bills drop two conference matches

Dan Hunninghake October 22, 2008
It is the first time since Saint Louis University joined the Atlantic 10 league four years ago that it lost more than one game in conference play. SLU, which came into the week ranked 15th in the country by the NSCAA, dips to 6-2-5 overall and 2-2-0 in the A-10.

Three undefeated teams in A-10 to play at Chaifetz

Derrick Neuner October 22, 2008
The weather may be getting cooler but things are heating up at the Chaifetz Pavilion. For the first time in its 33-year history, the women's volleyball program is nationally ranked. The team was voted No. 25 in the latest coaches' poll. "When I look at the other teams out there, I think we have one of the top 25 teams because of the kids we've brought in here," head coach Anne Kordes said.

Rollin’ with the punches

Robert Moehle October 22, 2008
Think of your local university or your parent's alma mater that you grew up rooting for. On Saturday afternoons in the fall, the city streets would be empty, with everyone either at the football stadium or seated in front of the living room television. When the conference basketball tournaments roll around in the spring, every team is four wins away from making it to the Big Dance.

Three straight wins give squad needed boost

Ashley Jones October 22, 2008
After two wins in last weekend's games, the women's soccer team is in a fourth place tie in the Atlantic 10 Conference. On Oct. 17, the team downed George Washington, 2-0. Junior midfielder Kelly Waeckerle scored both goals, with one assisted by sophomore midfielder Ashley Brazill.

Team heads to the Big Apple 4-0 in A-10

Dan Hunninghake October 8, 2008
The team is already talking about its trip to the Bronx on Sunday, Oct. 12, in which the New York shopping scene is calling the players' names. But that will come second to continuing the team's four-game undefeated streak in Atlantic 10 play. "Fordham is a tough place to play," head coach Anne Kordes said.

Protecting their house

Dan Hunninghake October 8, 2008
The number of ties for men's soccer may have surpassed its number of wins, but the team is still unbeaten at 4-0-5. And, you can thank the Bills' defense for that. Saint Louis University's back line shut out two consecutive Top-5 ranked opponents last week.

With two out and two hurt, injuries plague team

Ashley Jones October 8, 2008
Four women's soccer starters are injured-two playing through the pain, and two that are relegated to the sidelines. Junior midfielder Susan Frederickson broke her wrist in the Sept. 26 game against Duquesne but is still playing. Also still playing is freshman Andrea Barklage, who has an ankle injury.
