Women’s basketball drops three consecutive matches

After a long week on the road, the women's basketball team has a lax week. Saint Louis University went 0-3 against Kansas, University of Missouri-Kansas City and University of Tennessee-Martin. "We don't make excuses around here," women's basketball coach Shimmy Gray-Miller said.

Athletic director position remains vacant

Five months after Cheryl Levick announced her resignation as athletic director, Saint Louis University still has not found a permanent replacement for her position. A five-person search committee, chaired by Business School Dean Ellen Harshman, is accepting applications for the position.

Junior guard Kevin Lisch said that the competitive nature he acquired at a young age has fueled his play on the basketball court here at Saint Louis University. "I was on my first team when I was in first grade, so I probably started playing basketball when I was about 5 or 6 years old," Lisch said.

Sports have always consumed a large portion of sophomore guard Katie Paganelli's life. She was exposed to them early in her childhood-something that she believes made her a better player for Saint Louis University. "I had three older brothers, so I definitely had sports ingrained in my mind," Paganelli said.

Women: High hopes

After a surprising season last year, the Saint Louis University Women's Basketball team is hoping to capitalize on their success this year. The team is 2-5 through Nov. 30. Coach Shimmy Gray-Miller has transformed the team from one that won just four games in 2004-05 to one that captured the program's first conference tournament win since 2002.

Men: Great expectations

The men's basketball team enters the season with high expectations and a new sense of purpose. Leading the rebuilding effort is new coach Rick Majerus, who brings an illustrious résumé and a proven system of winning. Majerus, who accumulated a 422-147 coaching record in seventeen seasons split between Marquette, Ball State and, most notably, Utah, has never had a losing season in his career and has missed the postseason only twice.

How does this team compare to others you've coached? This is the best team I've seen since I've been here. I know the record doesn't show that, but this team works harder than any other and has the potential to do great things in the future. Our team is mainly freshmen and sophomores.
