Billiken Food Drive Gains Momentum

November is usually associated with the beginning of cold weather, football and Thanksgiving, a time when everyone is called to reflect on things for which they are thankful. This year Campus Ministry is helping the less fortunate with their annual food drive.

Within the last two months Campus Ministry has held weekly meetings in order to plan for the event. Student organizers Jen Jaspers and Kenny Kraft-with help from campus ministers Michael Doody, S.J. and Harry O’Rourke-have been working with other campus organizations in order to coordinate the massive operation of charity dubbed, “Fahrvromh?nger.”

As many students may have already noticed, several campus organizations have been promoting the drive.

Recently outside Fusz Hall, the Fusz Hall residence life staff held a pie throwing booth at which students could donate a canned good or a dollar in return for a chance to nail a Community Development Assistant (CDA) in the face with a plate full of whipped cream. The Phi Kappa Theta fraternity had pledges collect meals from students, as did the 12th floor of Griesedieck during their haunted house.

These groups, however, are not alone in their efforts. Each residence hall has been working on collecting meals.

“Lord knows something good has to come from my meal plan,” said freshman Frank Gyngart, of Florrisant “because the Gries cafeteria doesn’t do much for it.”

There are a number of activities planned for the coming week.

The drive kicks off with two showings of Adam Sandler’s summer blockbuster, “Big Daddy” this Saturday night, Nov. 13 in Kelly Auditorium.

The shows begin at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. Every patron is asked to bring at least one canned good.

Parks College offers their services in this year’s drive as well.

The school will be holding a chili cook-off from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. later during the food drive.

Admission is $3 for chili, soda and bread.

Another Greek event includes a bowl-a-thon, hosted by the Pi Kappa Alpha.

The events, however, are not limited to athletic activity. On Wednesday, Nov. 17, a benefit concert has been scheduled to take place at Kearby’s.

Kearby’s is located less than a block from campus on Lindell Avenue.

A third world dinner is planned for Thursday, Nov. 18 in the DeMattias Hall Cafeteria.

Students have a choice between a First, Second or Third-World meal, that consists of a bowl of rice and a glass of water.

Shirts will be sold around campus as well, which have the drive’s title on the front and a list of all supporting organizations on back.

The drive ends on Saturday, Nov. 20, with the annual Turkey Trot around the Frost campus.

The money raised during the drive is spread throughout three levels; local, national, and international.

“The money goes to directly help others,” said Jaspers, “not organizations that take overhead.”

“Last year we collected $24,000,” said Jaspers.

“We are not sure what we will get this year,” said Kraft, “But we hope everyone has a good time helping others.”
