The Student Activities Board’s second semester calendar is a full one. Comedians, dances, trips and movies have all been scheduled.
“We’re trying to cut down on events to make remaining ones bigger and cooler,” said SAB president Rob Bain.
The most recent, and one of the biggest events occurs next week, as former Saturday Night Live goat-boy and Half-Baked star Jim Breuer is scheduled to visit the Saint Louis Room in the Busch Memorial Center at 9:30 p.m.
Other scheduled comedians include Harland Williams, the hitchhiker from There’s Something About Mary, on Wednesday, Feb. 16 in the Saint Louis Room and Kevin Meaney in the Thursday, April 6 in the Billiken Club.
Coming up on Saturday, Jan. 29 is Spirit Day. The Billiken’s play Louisville at the Kiel Center. Buses will provide free transportation to and from campus. Later that evening, the Player’s Ball will be held at Casa Loma. A fee of $10 will provide pizza and admission into the dance. The bands 17th Floor, which has opened for TLC and Usher, and Midnight Riders are scheduled to appear.
SAB also is offering a spring break trip to Cancun. The March 4-11 trip will cost $659, which includes airfare, a 7-night hotel stay, Student Travel Services staff and airport/hotel transportation. Thirty slots are available. The deadline is Jan. 25.
SAB has several movie showings on schedule again this semester. The first, The Sixth Sense, will show tomorrow and Saturday. Notting Hill will show Friday, Feb. 4 and Saturday, Feb. 5. The first scheduled outdoor movie of the year, American Pie, is set for Thursday, April 27.
A new event, a block party which SAB is calling “Spring Fever,” is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 4. Bain hopes to get part of Laclede Avenue blocked in order to have rides, games and food.
Bain said SAB is hoping to utilize the opening of a new pub in the Billiken Club for more events.
“We’ll start trying to plan events in there, such as more comedians,” Bain said.
The grand opening of the pub is Tuesday at 4 p.m. with the first band starting at 8:45 p.m.
Several students have apparently taken advantage of the events of SAB.
“I’ve gone to past dances, and they’ve been fun,” freshman Bethany Paul said. “I just wish they scheduled movies during the week in addition to the weekends.”
Freshman Kate Oland agreed.
“You get to meet new people, and you get a chance to bond with friends,” Oland said.
“I’ve attended the comedians,” sophomore Mike Czuba said. “It’s a good time away from your studies and a chance to relax.”
A general interest meeting for SAB is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Additional information can be obtained by calling 977-2808.
