Calling all seniors: Are your resumes ready? Are you itching to interview? Have you thought about salary negotiations?
Saint Louis University’s Career Center wants to help students make the most of their job searches.
Last night in the Knights Room of Pius XII Memorial Library, Tom Hilliard, coordinator of the Career Center, held a seminar that covered job search skills and writing a powerful resume.
Hilliard also explained what skills employers are really looking for in prospective employees.
Students shared stories and concerns about entering the work force. Some worried they had too little experience to be marketable. Others were nervous about the questions at interviews.
Hilliard gave advice on how to keep one’s cool, and remain poised and confident. He conducted a mock interview and practiced handshaking to get students involved.
“You’re expected to change jobs 15 times in your career,” Hilliard said.
He stressed the importance of researching companies before interviews, since this information could get you a job over a more qualified person.
Hilliard also mentioned that the Career Center offers such as overnight resume reviews and on-campus recruiting.
He also passed out handouts concerning on-campus recruiting for Spring 2000.
Similar seminars will be held Friday afternoons in Davis-Shaughnessy Hall, room 173 from 3 to 4.
Dates are Feb. 11, 18 and 25; March 10, 17 and 24; and April 7. Students can also stop by the Career Services Center in DuBourg Hall or check out the Center’s web page through Saint Louis University’s homepage.
