With 600 students in attendance, KSLU celebrated its 50th birthday with a Fishbone concert.
“It was awesome,” said sophomore Matt Love. “When Fishbone came on, they started with a ton of energy.”
Held at the Firehouse, the more than $5,000 concert was a huge success, according to KSLU General Manager Jason Sengheiser.
“We’ve proven we can do it,” Sengheiser said.
Two bands opened for Fishbone-Workhorse Movement and Slightly Stoopid.
“Everybody sat and watched the first two bands while bobbing heads, but when Fishbone came out and hit three notes, the crowd was electric,” said KSLU Promotions Director Brian Suda.
Lisa von Wahlde, a student who attended the concert, is a big fan of Fishbone. “I love Fishbone. I thought it was awesome,” she said.
“Fishbone definitely brought a new sound to the Firehouse,” added senior Chip Toomey. “For me, it was more of a sit-down show. I would have rather sat on a bar stool and watched it.”
KSLU Operations Director Rich Bergin thought the event was a great step for KSLU.
“When the band was performing, the place was shoulder-to-shoulder,” he said.
Bergin added that some KSLU alumni returned to celebrate the birthday.
As a candidate for KSLU General Manager, Bergin would hope to continue the tradition of a KSLU concert each year.
“I definitely think this would be great on a yearly basis,” Bergin said.
Sengheiser thinks that the success of the Fishbone concert will contribute to the upcoming Mighty, Mighty BossTones and Citizen King concert at the Scottish Rite on April 19.
“I’m definitely going to BossTones,” said von Wahlde.
