“Any day now, we’ll be ready to go,” said general manager of KSLU, Jason Sengheiser, about the status of web radio.
A new type of medium, web radio functions as a radio over the internet.
KSLU will record shows from the air and then encode them to Real Audio files.
Once KSLU gets approval from SLU’s legal department, students will be able to visit the website of KSLU, download the files, and listen to the shows.
Soon, not only will students from the resident’s halls be able to listen to KSLU, but anybody in the world will also be able to enjoy the shows via the internet, any time of the day.
The reason for the wait to get the web radio broadcasting is the legal issues involved.
“If there is slander on the air or if there is a problem on the air, who will be liable?” explains Sengheiser.
There is also an issue of paying royalty to ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) and SESAC, Inc., which are organizations that represent the bands and record labels that radio stations, like KSLU play.
According to Sengheiser, these organizations are unsure of how to handle web radio because it is so new.
KSLU will have three different ways of getting to their audiences: their cable Channel 12, web radio, and soon a low power FM station.
“I’m really excited about [web radio]. It’s the next step for KSLU. We want to branch out to the internet and prove ourselves there,” says Sengheiser
The shows on web radio will be the most professional, highest quality ones, as determined by KSLU board of directors, according to Sengheiser.
