Advertising Team Places Fourth In Competition

Saint Louis University’s student advertising team, SLUtions, traveled to Lincoln, Neb., on April 27 to compete in the Ninth District of the American Advertising Federation National Student Advertising Competition.

Under the advising of Associate Professor William Tyler, SLUtions took fourth place with their “Define Your World” campaign for this year’s campaign sponsor, The New York Times.

The NSAC is an annual competition sponsored by the American Advertising Federation and a different national corporation is selected each year. Past sponsors have included Hallmark and Toyota.

Twelve universities and colleges competed this year in the ninth district, including teams from the University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Iowa State, Washington University, Webster University, Drury, Truman State, Wichita State and Southwest Missouri State University. The winner of the ninth district, University of Nebraska-Lincoln will go on to compete in the national competition in Las Vegas in June.

The competition consisted of two phases-a plans book and a presentation. Each team composed a 40-page, integrated-marketing plans book that was sent to the judges prior to the competition.

This was followed by each team’s professional presentation before a panel of judges. One judge from Bozell Advertising Agency in Chicago gave the team a perfect score on all phases of the presentation.

In five of the last six years, teams from SLU have finished either second, third or fourth.

SLUtions will present their “Define Your World” Campaign for The New York Times on Thursday, May 4 in Xavier G-08. Visitors are welcome to Saint Louis University’s award-winning presentation. Students who are interested in advertising, promotions, marketing and public relations should contact William Tyler at 977-3190 for more information.
