The much anticipated John and Lucy Cook Hall, the newest building on campus, has received a July 5 substantial-completion date. The business department will begin move early this July.
“Thirty-eight days were lost to weather during the construction phase of the project,” Vice President of Facilities Management and Civic Affairs Kathleen Brady said.
“Because the construction schedule included provisions for expected weather-related delays, the 38 days lost had minimal impact on the project,” Brady added.
The $15 million project began in 1998, when St. Louis University graduate John M. Cook of The Cook Family Foundation donated $5 million to the School of Business and Administration for the expansion of the school, as well as the development of its full time Masters program.
The Cook Hall classrooms, the 350-seat auditorium and the boardroom will all have remote-controlled audio/visual equipment with LCD projection capabilities. This equipment will handle input from various sources such as VCRs, laptop computers and cable television. All classrooms will be wired to the Internet.
According to Brady, the architecture of Cook Hall, such as the 25-ton, 114-foot-tall Neo-gothic steel tower structure, was designed to complement other University buildings, particularly the 65-year-old Davis Shaughnessy Hall to which Cook Hall is connected. The brick, along with handcarved limestone, was specially chosen to match perfectly the existing brick on Davis Shaughnessy Hall.
Other features of the building include a 40-foot-tall, three-story atrium bordered by six classrooms. Thirty little spaces in various spots throughout the building will exist for group study and projects.
Additional work, such as painting and the installation of new carpet in Davis Shaughnessy Hall, will have a Fall semester completion date.
