Registration Booths To Aid Prospective Voters

It’s your choice. On Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2000, citizens all across the nation will choose the next president of the United States, possibly the most powerful man in the world.

Saint Louis University Student Government Association will help you cast your ballot.

“You vote because it allows your voice to be heard on matters that are important to you,” explained Dan Schniedermeier, the SGA senator organizing the voter registration. “It allows you to say at least you did your part.”

He views the entire process of “getting out the vote” in three steps: registration, education and voting.

Beginning on Tuesday, SGA, with the help of Alpha Phi Omega and the Black Student Alliance will have registration booths in the Quad between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

At the booths, students can register to vote, change voter registration to this area or find information on absentee voting. If completed next week, all new voters and changes in registration will allow the student to vote in the November election.

In addition to the registration booths, Schniedermeier has been working with the College Republicans and Young Democrats to bring local and state candidates to campus. Next Wednesday and Thursday, students will have the opportunity to register in their residence halls and apartment complexes. Tables will be set up in the hall lobbies from 10 am. to 12 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The Missouri date for registration is Oct. 11, in order to vote in November.

Schniedermeier hopes students will act next week to assure their voting ability in November.

He also explained that students with permanent addresses outside of the area may change their voter registration to this area to avoid absentee voting.

Director of Student Life Phil Lyons explained, “[Registering students] is something student governments typically do at other campuses. It’s a nice service to offer.”

In October, SGA with the assis-tance of other organizations plans to provide educational opportunities to inform voters on the issues and candidates.

“Take the time to register, but also become educated,” Schniedermeier said.

“A vote is worthless unless it is an educated vote.”

To students who think no candidate is worth their vote, Schniedermeier responds, “Think about what issues are important to you and find a candidate who stands for those, but remember that no one agrees on everything. Simply decide who would best serve you.”
