Residence Life Adopts “Love Thy Neighbor” Philosophy For Village

“We really want to nip it in the bud,” said Lisa Thompson, assistant director of Residence Life.

With several complaints to the Department of Residence Life and the Department of Public Safety, Village Apartments residents are being made aware that such noise and inappropriate behavior violations are compromising the community atmosphere.

The majority of complaints have come from the Village’s lower quad near Laclede Avenue.

Donna Bess, area coordinator for the Village, explained that a lot of students need to study or get up early for work, and these students are being disturbed due to noise and other innapropriate behavior usually attributed to alcohol.

“We’re beginning to see a pattern of behavior,” Thompson explained. “It’s much like it has been in the past years. Students’ decisions impact the greater community.”

Thompson added that the philosophy regarding the Village has been that it is a privilege; the expectation is that students should behave in a positive manner.

A waiting list for the Village exists, as many students are waiting to get in, Bess said.

As of now, no serious actions have been taken against noise and behavior violations.

“We’re interested in geting the community involved so that they are a part of the solution,” Thompson said.

Bess expects the community will say that such behavior will not be tolerated.

Seeing her role as a facilitator for community, Bess hopes to hold several social and educational gatherings for Village residents. Through these gatherings, she hopes students will get to know their neighbors.

“I encourage students to speak with their neighbors if they have a problem,” Bess said.

Summarizing the concern of Residence Life, Bess explained that the simple solution is that students are respectful of their neighbors.
