Failed Resolution Of Gratitude Stirs Debate At SGA

Last night, the Student Government Association did not pass a resolution to offer thanks and appreciation to the upper administration and the Department of Facility Services for the improvements made to the residence halls and apartments as a result of Project SLU2000.

According to the resolution, noted improvements include: air conditioning in Marguerite Hall and Marchetti Towers, renovations of bathrooms in Reinert and Marguerite Halls, touch-up repairs in Notre Dame Hall and reconditioning of the upper floors in Griesedieck Hall.

“Why would we thank someone for doing their job?” asked graduate commuter senator Angela Haas.

Parks College senator Matt Love concedes that the facilities department did an excellent job with improvements. However, Love pointed out that these changes would not have been needed, if the administration hadn’t made the mistake of admitting too many students.

Lauren Gretz, SGA executive vice president, said the resolution contradicts a bill passed earlier in the semester by the SGA to form a committee dealing with the overcrowding of the University.

Griesedieck Complex Senator Heidi Bookwalter, co-author of the resolution, supported her stance, expressing gratitude for things like the sprinklers in Griesedieck and air conditioning in Marguerite. “It doesn’t hurt to thank someone for doing a good job,” Bookwalter said.

“The quality of living was improved; overcrowding is a different issue,” said John Ferren, Marguerite Hall senator and co-author.

Senator Adam Altman, undergraduate commuter, said, “All steps taken by the administration and facilities services have been reactive steps. When are they going to begin taking some proactive steps?”

The resolution failed.

In old business, the bill to charter a women’s soccer club was approved after being tabled from discussion last week. The main issue in question for chartering the new organization was funding.

“We exist to be a voice of students,” said undergraduate commuter senator James McNichols. “If we continue on this track, we’re going to have to stop chartering these organizations eventually. While funding may not be an issue now, it definitely will be.”

SGA President Jay Perry reminded the senate members that it is their legislative intent simply to charter an organization-funding is a different issue. “We have set the precedent of chartering student organizations like this one,” Perry said. “Is it fair to stop now? I don’t think so.”

On the issue of funding, Perry said, “It’s not the fault of these groups that they want money, but they do have a right to be chartered.”
