Islamic Students Celebrate Ramadan

Combining a devout religious practice with the life of a University student, Muslims will celebrate the holy month of Ramadan, which began on Monday.

Included in this month of reflection and spiritual devotion is the obligation of fasting from sunrise to sunset-abstaining from food, drink, sexual relations and smoking.

Deemah Salem explained, “The fasting trains our bodies for the rest of the year to abstain from things you do everyday that you’re not supposed to do.”

Razi Rashid added that it helps strengthen the community by treating all as equals. “It surpasses barriers,” he said.

The month is considered holy because it was in Ramadan that Islamic people believe the Koran, the Islamic holy book, was given to Mohammed.

In addition to the fasting, it is believed that any good deeds performed during Ramadan are multiplied tenfold.

The Muslim Student Association is attempting to keep the Muslim community strong in their fasting by organizing a variety of meals after sunset ranging from pot lucks to Fusz Food Court and delivered pizza.

On Friday, Muslims from the University, Washington University and the surrounding community will gather in the Argentum room for a catered dinner.

Prior to sunrise, many Muslims will eat something before their morning prayers. Along these lines, MSA is planning a trip to Uncle Bill’s early Saturday morning.

With the new moon, Ramadan will end several days after Christmas. Following Ramadan, the celebration of Eid al-Fitr begins with three days of giving gifts and visiting family and friends.
