KSLU Puts LPFM Plans On Hold

KSLU has two hot projects on the horizon-applying for a low-power FM radio station and sponsoring a large concert.

Although KSLU is hopeful that they will one day have an LPFM station, a Congressional bill may prevent them from having that opportunity. Bill 2030 includes a rider that would basically eliminate the viability of low power radio station. President Bill Clinton has said he would veto the bill, but with current political events, the future of LPFM is uncertain.

The Missouri window for LPFM applications opened Nov. 1. KSLU has the application filled out and ready to turn in, whenever it has the go ahead. But, for the moment, everything has been put on hold.

If KSLU submits the application, the outlook for being awarded LPFM is promising, said KSLU General Manager Brian Suda.

According to the Federal Communications Commission, organizations awarded LPFM stations must be not-for-profit and use the facility for educational and community purposes.

KSLU has applied for station #255, which would be 92.9 on the FM dial. The station would be 100 watts and cover up to a 2.5-mile radius, taking KSLU into downtown, midtown and out near Washington University.

“KSLU has a lot to offer these areas,” said Suda.

KSLU is currently working with a group of Jesuits on production. The radio station is also looking into reinstating the KSLU practicum as a class. These measures are being taken so that KSLU can improve their professionalism and be more organized, explained Suda.

“I think it would be a mistake if they didn’t grant us the station,” said Suda.

In another project, KSLU will be hosting the Old 97’s and Centro-matic, two groups from Texas.

The concert, organized by KSLU Events Director Chris Schaeffer, is this Saturday, Nov. 11. Doors open at 8 p.m. at the Firehouse on Olive Street.

KSLU is expecting a large turnout of students from SLU, California, Nevada and Ohio.

Tickets are available for $5 to students in the Office of Student Life located in the Busch Memorial Center, room 300. Tickets will be available at the door. There will be a $2 charge at the door for guests 21 and under.

“Tickets are going to go fast. People really love these two bands, so students should buy their tickets now,” said Schaeffer.

KSLU is working with the Campus Ministry to kickoff the food drive with the concert.

Schaeffer added, “This is going to be a great concert for a nominal fee. All students should come.”
