When the MTV Campus Invasion Tour was announced in September, many students and administrators may have questioned if students would actually go. Those doubting Thomases were apparently wrong.
Last Thursday, more than 2,500 students attended the concert featuring Wyclef Jean, De La Soul and Black Eyed Peas. The concert sold out by approximately 4 p.m. on Thursday.
“I was ecstatic that so many of our students took part in something they thought was fun,” said Kathy Humphrey, vice president for Student Development.
The concert was sponsored by Student Activities Board and received some funding from the Office of Student Life.
Chris Grabau, SAB advisor, said, “Hopefully, this was an event people will remember for a long time.”
Many attending the concert may not have realized the hours of work that it took to convert the Simon Recreation Center into a concert venue.
Work crews comprised of SAB, KSLU and several fraternities-Sigma Phi Epsilon, Phi Delta Theta and Alpha Delta Gamma-worked throughout the day, beginning at 5 a.m. and ending at 5:30 a.m. on Friday.
Grabau said that the MTV producers were impressed with the amount of help from students as well as the intensity of the crowd.
Despite the transformation of the Rec Center into a concert venue, Ryan Murphy, SAB president, pointed out that it is not a concert venue.
“[The Rec Center] did as good as it could,” Murphy said. He emphasized that for a larger concert, a new venue would be necessary.Due to structural and fire safety constraints, ticket sales were limited to 2,500.
SAB has already begun the initial planning of their next large endeavor-Spring Fever.
