SLU Graduates: Have Spirit, Will Travel

The “sons and daughters” of Saint Louis University have spread throughout the world, taking with them the Jesuit spirit of service.

Several weeks ago, University President Lawrence Biondi, S.J. and Vice President for Development and University Relations Don Whelan traveled to the Far East to visit alumni and create stronger ties with SLU.

Visiting Seoul, South Korea, Taipei, Taiwan and Bangkok, Thailand, Biondi and Whelan were impressed with the alumni they met and their commitment to their alma mater.

“Alumni continually amaze me with their unwavering enthusiasm and commitment toward Saint Louis University,” Biondi said.

With more than 900 alumni in these three countries, the concept of developing men and women for others really resonates, stated Biondi.

While most of the alumni visited are not Catholic, they spoke of how Jesuit education transcends religious differences.

During the trip, Biondi signed a collaboration agreement with Fu-Jen University, one of the largest Catholic universities in the world with more than 22,000 students. The agreement will facilitate the exchange of students and faculty.

In Bangkok, Biondi and Whelan met with Rev. Joseph Maier, C.S.S.R., recipient of the 1999 Sword of Ignatius Loyola, SLU’s highest honor for individual achievement.

Maier has devoted his life to improving the quality of life in one of the slums in Bangkok. His work includes the establishment of a kindergarten program, a shelter for street children, an AIDS clinic and hospice and several other services.

SLU alumnus and trustee John Cook joined Biondi in a visit with the Cardinal Archbishop of Bangkok. In that meeting, Cook agreed to fund a scholarship program that would enable a priest from the Archdiocese of Thailand to pursue an MBA at SLU. Upon return to Bangkok, the priest would assist the Archdiocese with economic policies.

In Seoul, Biondi strengthened the relationship with Sogang University, a sister Jesuit university, founded by Wisconsin province Jesuits.

“What thrilled me most was the unparalleled graciousness we received from more than 200 former students, parents of current students, friends and benefactors,” Biondi said. “In an area that places high value on education, SLU remains a visible, valued, respected institution-thanks to its alumni.”
