Student’s computer seized for threatening e-mails

On Tuesday, Feb. 20, officers from St. Louis Police Department, the Department of Public Safety and Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department entered a residence hall room on campus, interviewed a suspect and seized his computer’s hard drive.

According to DPS Investigator Dave Willmering, on Friday, Feb. 16, Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department in Wisconsin contacted Saint Louis University after receiving a report that a female victim of an alleged crime in Wisconsin was sent a threatening e-mail by someone traced back to a SLU computer terminal.

By Monday, DPS and Information Technology Services technicians were able to determine where the computer was located.

City police obtained a search warrant for the suspects’ room and hard drive.

Willmering said that the suspect admitted his involvement but was not arrested, as the original case in Wisconsin is ongoing. The crime of tampering with a witness is a misdemeanor. Willmering was unsure how the Wisconsin officials would handle the charge.

The Wisconsin case is related to the recent acquittal of NFL star Mark Chmura of third-degree sexual assault charges. The SLU suspect is a relative of the co-defendant in that case, according to Willmering.

Due to the upcoming trial in early March, the SLU student was unable to comment on the situation.
