Student political debate to wrap up Great Issues events

Next Tuesday the College Republicans and Young Democrats from Saint Louis University will face off. The debate, the last Great Issues event of the year, will take place in the auditorium of Cook Hall at 7:30 p.m.

According to Tricia Fechter, Great Issues Committee chairperson, the event will feature five representatives each from the College Republicans and the Young Democrats. Each side will have a moderator who will write questions to be discussed, and Phil Lyons, director of Student Life, will be the overall moderator of the debate.

The debate will last about one hour, and there will be one-half hour for questions from the audience afterward.

Fechter said that the committee’s original plan for its final event was to host a panel of local politicians, but it couldn’t get equal representation of Democrats and Republicans.

“We really wanted to have a balanced panel of local politicians, but it just wasn’t happening,” Fechter said. “We are, however, very excited about the debate between student groups.”
