Professor’s book draws solid reviews

Kenneth Warren, Ph.D., was a popular source for insight during the 2000 election. In the form of a new book, Warren, a professor of political science at Saint Louis University, continues to influence the world of politics and the media.

“In Defense of Public Opinion Polling” examines a wide range of issues, including the history of polling and a closer look at the problems of the 2000 election.

Warren’s book has been recently reviewed in Publisher’s Weekly. “It’s off to a good start and seems to be doing well,” Warren said.

Chapter one is titled: Why Americans Hate Pollsters.

“As a pollster, I know that people generally hate pollsters,” Warren said. “I believe that pollsters promote democracy in the U.S. and across the world, especially in places like Yugoslavia, where pollsters helped with the recent election.”

The book also offers insight into many important political topics, such as the relationship between journalists and politicians, bad polls and good polls and the growing popularity of polls in other countries.

“Kenneth Warren brilliantly explains what we do, how we do it and why we provide a valuable service,” stated John Zogby in a press release. Zogby is president and CEO of Zogby International, one of the nations’ leading polling firms, with offices in New York, Washington, D.C., and Canada.

During the 2000 election, many Americans regarded polls as flawed and an invasion of privacy. In his book, Warren argues that well-conducted scientific polls are not only accurate but also are the tools to understanding society.

The cover of the book is a cartoon depicting a pollster on a stage with the audience chucking tomatoes at him. There are seven other cartoons throughout the book. Warren designed the cover, and all the cartoons and had an artist render them for the book.

Warren ends the book with a recap of the November 2000 presidential elections and 136 gubernatorial races. He reports how the 13 major pollsters faired in predicting the results.

“Kenneth Warren sets the record straight with this balanced, clear and cheerful account,” stated CNN senior political analyst William Schneider.

Warren is well known among St. Louis and national media. He served as chief political analyst and pollster for St. Louis’ ABC affiliate for many years and has appeared on several programs, including CNN’s Inside Politics, CNN News, the CBS Evening News, and NBC’s Sally Jesse Raphael Show.

Warren is also the president of the well-respected Warren Poll and is the author of many other works, including “Administrative Law in the Political System.”
