Greeks set activities for recruitment week

Looking for a great way to meet new people? Want to get involved in leadership positions? How about giving back to the community through service? If you answered yes to any of these questions then look no further than the Greek life at Saint Louis University. The fraternities of the Interfraternity Council and the sororities that compose the Panhellenic Council offer a variety of opportunities to develop personal strengths and skills in a supportive atmosphere.

According to Nikki Morton, Panhellenic vice president of Recruitment, and Michelle Rogers, Panhellenic president agrees, “Greek life can be an exciting, rewarding and definitely unforgettable experience.”

Greek organizations participate in all aspects of life on SLU’s campus such as numerous fund-raising activities that benefit everything from Alzhemier’s’ research to the Ronald McDonald House to local charities in the St. Louis area. The all-Greek GPA traditionally exceeds that of the entire University, proving that scholarship is an important priority of Greek life. Additionally, Greeks participate and hold leadership positions in other campus activities such as the Student Activities Board, Oriflamme, Student Government Association and University Ambassadors as well as intramurals and sports teams. Greek Life also provides lifetime friendships with other students on campus.

Lauren Smith, president of Sigma Kappa Sorority, strongly believes in the benefits of the Greek System. “There is such a superb community of fraternities and sororities here at SLU. Joining a sorority adds a whole new dimension to your life . Sororities offer opportunities for leadership, campus involvement, community service and that unique and precious bond known as sisterhood.”

Beginning this week, students will have the opportunity to see what SLU’s Greek Life entails. The Panhellenic Council sponsors a Sorority Information Night tonight at 6:30 and 7:30 in the St. Louis Room located on the third floor of the Busch Memorial Center Tuesday Sept. 4 marks the beginning of the formal recruitment process.

The Council is also proud to expand its membership to include the newest sorority on campus-Delta Gamma. They are offering the Delta Gamma Information Night on Aug. 30 at 8:30 for all those who are interested in learning about SLU’s new chapter. Vice President of Membership Development of the Interfraternity Council Bryan McGowan, encourages everyone to come out to the Forum.

“Joining a fraternity is a great way to meet new people and get involved at SLU,” McGowan said.

On Sept. 6 the Interfraternity Council will host a Fraternity Forum for all those interested in becoming a member of one of the 11 fraternities on campus.

Each fraternity will be available to answer questions and provide information at the Boland Plaza starting at 3:00 p.m.
