KSLU streams to top

On Monday, KSLU went global.

For four hours, listeners could hear audio streaming from KSLU’s first Internet broadcast. The live, streaming audio broadcast could be downloaded and listened to using RealAudio format.

This Internet debut is the first of many events scheduled this semester for the cable radio station, said General Manager Ron Parres.

“Last semester was a learning curve; this semester we have a much better sense of what we’re doing, with a clearer focus,” Parres said.

The broadcast was limited to four hours on Monday, as it drains significant resources from the University’s network servers.

Parres had to get University approval to broadcast just those four hours. He will be meeting with University officials this week to determine how frequently KSLU can broadcast live across the Internet.

KSLU has received approval to air archived shows that can be recorded and downloaded at any time from the KSLU Web site.

Streaming audio is a continual download, while hour-long archived shows can be downloaded in just a few minutes.

With limited hard-drive space to record shows, only select shows with veteran DJs will be recorded, at first.

Fiber, KSLU’s magazine, will return in a few weeks to provide complete details of the station’s schedule.

KSLU also will be sponsoring several open-mike nights throughout the semester.

The first open-mike night will be Feb. 21 in the lower level of the Busch Memorial Center. The time will be determined later. This open-mike night will be held in conjunction with Student Activities Board and Student Government Association as a “Rock-the-Vote” party.

“The nature of open-mic night is that anyone can come up and play a song,” explained KSLU Events Director Chris Schaeffer.

He added that KSLU is also planning a concert featuring Saint Louis University student bands. “Perhaps it will be a farewell concert to the BMC,” Schaeffer said.

KSLU’s semester will conclude with Spring Fever, which they are co-sponsoring with the Student Activities Board. Parres hopes to bring several popular house DJs to perform throughout the day.
