Courses offered at Rec

During the spring semester, Saint Louis University’s Simon Recreation Center will serve as the host site for a series of fitness and aerobics certification programs geared toward students.

Health organizations, such as the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and the World Instructional Training Schools (WITS), offer certification classes for aerobics, aqua aerobics, yoga and personal training.

“We are glad to be able to extend this opportunity to members of the SLU community,” said Glen Kemper, coordinator of Fitness Programs. “This is a way for students to gain some real life experience.”

This Sunday, March 24, those who have a strong interest and a basic understanding of aerobics can attend a one-day training class that will result in a primary general certification.

After receiving a general certificate a person could continue to take more classes in specialized areas, such as kickboxing and studio cycling.

“A certification is essential for anyone who would like to go on and instruct,” Kemper says.

The other three programs run anywhere from a month to six weeks long, beginning in April. The Aqua Fitness program begins April 1 and lasts until May 1.

Each Monday, classes meet in the conference room for instruction and dryland work is taught. Wednesday classes convene in the pools.

The personal trainer certification course meets every Saturday from April 6 – May 4. Yoga is a six-week session running April 7- June 30.

“These programs are more of a time commitment,” Kemper says. “However, the area a valuable opportunity and are well worth it. In fact, it is an investment for the future.”
