SGA discusses ongoing relief efforts for Katrina victims

The Student Government Association showed few “fireworks” yesterday at their weekly meeting, according to Financial Vice President Joseph Cirillo.

“Where are the debates?” he asked.

SGA quickly passed three bills yesterday but left time to talk about what they considered salient.

They completed their agenda in just 55 minutes, but spent most of those minutes discussing how to help those afflicted by Hurricane Katrina. Executive Vice President Evan Krauss has instigated Saint Louis University’s Hurricane Relief Fund, and at the meeting, the rest of the SGA board acknowledged his efforts as well as those of the rest of the SLU community.

“I waited behind 60 people to sign up after church to drive New Orleans students to Target. I was impressed,” said Academic Vice President Elle Hogan.

To further the acts of good deeds for the Loyola and Tulane students, the SGA passed a resolution to welcome them.

However, before any such bills were passed, Vice President of Facilities and Civic Affairs Kathleen Brady updated SGA members with the University’s input into future establishments around the North Lindell Boulevard and Grand Center areas.

“We want to bring activity close to campus where students can walk to,” said Brady.

SLU has no control over the Grand Center area, but “we still have the input,” said Brady. “We want to hear what students want to see. Hopefully, eventually, we’ll put in new residential, commercial or retail establishments.”

On the other hand, three definite decisions were made yesterday.

First, four new student conduct board associate justices were elected.

“We are looking for four more students interested in criminal justice or law,” said President Cari Johns. Currently, the new justices are Dan Mueller, Alicia Shields, Meggie Talbot, Joe Tomlinson and Torie Harrington.

Secondly, James Veltrie, S.J., was announced as the new SGA chaplain.

“While working in admissions, he has been influential in the decision of many students who chose to attend SLU and has proven his commitment to the well-being of SLU students,” said Administrative Vice President Teresa Gabhart. Veltrie is replacing a former member of SLU’s community, Bernard Barry, S.J.

Third, the resolution to welcome the new students who have transferred due to Hurricane Katrina was unanimously agreed upon. The welcome begins today in the form of an orientation for the displaced New Orleans students in DuBourg Hall. On Sunday, in BSC room 251, students are invited to gather with Krauss and discuss what to do to help. Student organizations can post their fundraisers on www.slu.edu/katrina, which will soon turn into katrina.slu.edu. Donations are also accepted on the Web site.

Also announced were the arrivals of the much-awaited on-campus food services. Salsarita’s, scheduled to open today, is said to be “better than Qdoba,” according to Johns. Subway should open next week.

Father Biondi offered his own food services to SGA members Monday, welcoming them to his house for a barbecue. According to Senator Charles Flint, Biondi “wanted to make a personal connection with the senate so he can make a connection with the student body.”

Next week, Johns and senior Andrew Chappelle will present the Billiken Pride Initiative to the Senate, hoping to kick off some school spirit at SLU.

SGA also expressed their condolences to the family of Jordan Scheer, who lost their son, a SLU freshman, to a terminal disease. The wake is scheduled for this Friday in Washington, Mo., and will be followed by a funeral on Saturday.
