SLU remembers Jordan Scheer, 18

Last Wednesday, Sept. 7, in the early morning, freshman Jordan Scheer, 18, died in his Reinert Hall dorm room. He was a pre-med student who chose to attend Saint Louis University for its proximity to home in Washington, Mo. “He really liked the medical program, the people here and the campus. Jordan visited me here last year,” said sophomore Ben Hagen, a life-long friend of Scheer. Approximately 20 students and administratiors, along with the Student Government Association executive board, attended the visitation for Scheer, which was held Friday, Sept. 9, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington, where Scheer attended middle school. Scheer’s residental advisor, Steve Ranz, helped orchestrate the transportation for students to the service. “We originally didn’t have any transportation planned, so I stayed up till 2 a.m. on Thursday trying to get a head count of how many students wanted to go. We ended up renting three Enterprise minivans and the RAs drove them,” said Ranz. At the visitation, the line to speak with Scheer’s immediate family was estimated to be an hour and a half long. Ranz added that Scheer’s parents were honored, and that they appreciated the attendance of the SLU students, who donned light purple ribbons in memory of Jordan. The funeral was on Saturday, Sept. 10, and was attended by Scheer’s roommate and the two RAs on his floor, Ranz and Ryan Barone. The service was standing room only; people crowded the benches and filled the balcony at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The attendees sang many songs, including “On Eagles’ Wings,” “All Rise” and “Amazing Grace.” Immediately following the funeral a luncheon was held where relatives and friends reminisced and shared personal stories about Scheer. In addition, prayer services were held for students in Reinert last Wednesday and throughout the week. Campus minister Sister Jeannine Declue helped engage residents in a prayer of remembrance and trust and also allowed students to share their feelings or a story about Jordan. Although Jordan suffered from a long-term medical condition, his friends say that he persevered and kept a level head through it all. “He was serious when he needed to be, but most of the time he was lighthearted and joking around,” Hagen said. Scheer was only at SLU for two weeks, but his approach to life and his medical problems displayed a maturity that should serve as a model for others. “Jordan worked through it and never let it get to him. He was always able to see the positive in every situation,” said Hagen. “Even when he was down, he was always helping other people and doing what he could for them.” Scheer’s family has asked that memorials be made to the organization Friends of Kids with Cancer.
