Academic Vice President: Gene Diamond

Based on its title, the academic vice president must possess first-rate intellect and the ability to communicate well with both administrators and students. Senator Gene Diamond possesses both of those capabilities, making him the most qualified person for this position. Diamond’s experience on SGA sets him apart from his counterpart. Diamond’s communication skills, unparalleled in this race, will be vital in this position as a conduit for students and administrators, in a way that demands respects from both parties. The talents that Diamond brings to the table will command respect from both parties and allow him to effectively accomplish his goals. However, while Diamond mentioned his desire to bring new academic programs to campus, he needs to consider the pitfalls of current programs, whether they be apathetic teaching or poor academic advising. New programs are a wonderful idea, but there are more pressing academic concerns for Diamond to address. Furthermore, Diamond’s willingness to put his neck on the line for his beliefs, yet listen to others before making decisions, should serve as reassurance to students that he is will to fight for their concerns.Mr. Adnan Hussain, while articulate, lacks the necessary experience to handle a job of this magnitude. Hussain cites the fact that he is fresh off the college search as his experience for this position; while that would make him a valuable asset to the academic affairs committee, it does not qualify him to head it. Hussain’s search led him to deal mainly with university salespeople; this does not replace true academic experience. Hussain outlined feasible and important goals as far as academic advising is concerned, and Diamond would be wise to implement those strategies. We do not doubt that Hussain has talent and potential as a leader in SGA and at SLU is clear. He should continue his work with organizations around campus and consider running for an open Senate seat in the fall. Hussain would serve SGA well as a senator, but not as a member of the executive board.
