Administrative Vice President: Anne Nickson

Although we do so tepidly, we endorse Senator Anne Nickson for the position of academic vice president. Nickson did little to distinguish herself from her opponent ideologically during the debates, but her experience and demeanor make her the better candidate to fill the position. Nickson’s experience serving on the Committee on Internal Affairs, a committee chaired by the administrative vice president, will make for an easy transition to next year. Nickson’s experience hiring and firing desk workers as an Assistant Residence Coordinator in Griesidieck demonstrates her ability to handle potential impeachments and appoint new senators each semester. Nickson’s demeanor and professionalism will command respect in the Senate chambers, and assist in keeping the Senate on task. Her ideas were not as creative as her opponent’s, but they are more feasible. Nickson would be well advised to consider Howard’s ideas of online polling, even if that means legislation needs to be in by Monday. If anything, this will keep SGA’s business on an earlier schedule every week. Her idea to reform the SGA mailer, while seemingly insignificant, will help students to find out about and get involved in upcoming events. Senator Samantha Howard clearly brings energy to whatever room she walks into; however, we’re not sure she would command the same respect in the position that Nickson would. While Howard’s energy is contagious, a certain level of professionalism is essential for success in an executive board seat. Howard nonetheless had good ideas on implementing online polling and having senators turn legislation in early. Similar to Hussain, Howard would serve SGA well as a senator again in the fall. Her enthusiasm will encourage other senators to be active in the creation of legislation and she should continue to put to use her natural ability to lead students. We expect good things from Howard next year, just not in this position.
