To the Editor:
As a member of the GLBTQA (gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning, ally) community, I was both saddened and outraged to hear that a professor verbally harassed members of the Rainbow Alliance. It is unacceptable for that to occur at a university that prides itself in its Jesuit tradition. ALL students, faculty and staff regardless of sexual orientation, race, religious background, gender identity, level of ability, class and religious background should live without fear of personal attack at SLU.
We, as members of the Saint Louis University community, cannot miss out on the opportunity to turn this unfortunate incident into something positive. Mandatory diversity training needs to be in place for all faculty and staff at SLU, so that a similar situation does not happen. Secondly, we must come together to send a strong message that we do not approve of hate. We must come together and defend the values of SLU by saying proudly together: “NOT AT SLU!”
