Aqua Teen writers forget to create plot

Remember Serenity? The movie was made almost solely for fans of the prematurely cancelled sci-fi series Firefly, which was confusing and uninteresting for most people who weren’t fans of the show. Well, take that concept of making a niche movie and apply it to the [Adult Swim] cartoon Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and you’ll have the new movie Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters (directed by Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis, who also write the TV series). Beware, though; even if you like the show, the movie makes absolutely no sense.

If Master Shake, Frylock, Meatwad, Carl, The Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past, Plutonians, Mooninites, MC Pee Pants and Dr. Weird are familiar names, then this movie is for you. If not, you’ll probably need to steer clear from this one. ATHFCMFFT is a 90-minute-long episode of the TV program off of which it is based. The animation is done the same, the voices are the same, the story is confusing and ends suddenly, almost all of the characters, excluding Chicken Bittle and Walter Melon, are on the show, and it is beyond ridiculous.

If a plot could possibly be derived from this film, it would be that the Aqua Teens (Frylock, Master Shake and Meatwad) are trying to put together a workout machine called the “Insanoplex” (which Shake stole from disgruntled neighbor Carl), which is apparently a doomsday device. Not heeding the warnings given to them, the Aqua Teens (or Frylock, rather) put the machine together despite the fact that it is missing a crucial piece.

Meanwhile, Oglethorpe, one of the two Plutonians, sees an ad for the Insanoplex and decides that he wants one. He then goes to Earth along with his companion Emory and the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past, who keeps foretelling the end of the world by means of the Insanoplex.

Back on the South Jersey shore, Dr. Weird and Steve are being imposed upon when luxury lofts are built right next to Dr. Weird’s lab. The Aqua Teens, as well as the Plutonians and the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past, all head to the lab to try to find the missing piece. When the Aqua Teens retrieve the missing part and put it in the Insanoplex, the machine turns into a giant robot that takes Carl and goes on a rampage, constantly playing annoying dance music.

From this point forward, the Aqua Teens try to stop the robot by any means necessary. Frylock tries to remember where the Aqua teens came from, and explains the connection between themselves and Dr. Weird. The Mooninites, Ignignokt and Err also come down to Earth to try and wreak havoc of their own.

Needless to say, ATHFCMFFT works best when it isn’t trying to make sense, especially since it doesn’t any of the problems created in the movie. If non-fans can get past the movie’s pure obscurity and randomness, they’ll have plenty of laughs in store, and fans of the cult series will eat this one up. ATHFCMFFT is about six times longer than an episode of the show on which it is based, but it has at least 10 times more laughs.
